EMILY THOMAS

summer notes

Save the date This fall, the Ojai Studio Artists open studio tour is back, and I have new work for it. I’ve been working on a new series of larger pieces, a little more abstract, and expressive in a different way. I put a lot into them and I’m looking forward to showing you.

VOYAGE LA: Conversations with Emily Thomas MaHarry

I was able to share a bit about my life and my vision with the nice folks at Voyage LA.

I wouldn’t say my story is necessarily dramatic or unique by any means, but it does reflect my desire to communicate how I interpret things and how determined I am to accomplish what I have in mind. For a highly sensitive and empathic person, it is way easier for me to do that visually rather than verbally. It’s how I process everything

My work is about how I interpret my surroundings and emotions through abstract landscapes. Now, I’m working as a full-time artist, spending time in the mountains and teaching art to kids at an incredible art center.I’m building and putting everything into my paintings.

Check out the whole interview here.

ABSTRACT LANDSCAPES
THAT EVOKE THE EMOTIONS OF A PLACE

I spend a lot of time in the areas I paint before I paint them, subconsciously absorbing colors of the coasts and mountains I run and backpack in.

Observing. Feeling it out. Simplifying complex ideas into minimal compositions.

Sometimes I don’t intentionally paint a specific area, but it presents itself from my subconscious. I absorb the colors and feel of a place, and that comes out in my work.

As humans, we have so many layers of emotions, feelings, cells, DNA that make up our being, and I really like that parallel.

MY WORK IS ABOUT HOW I INTERPRET MY SURROUNDINGS,
IDEAS AND EMOTIONS THROUGH ABSTRACT LANDSCAPES.

My landscapes are representative of that and how we have so much underneath the surface.

Most of my inspiration comes from California landscapes, in and around Ojai and Ventura. I especially love the colors of overcast mornings, how the light affects the clarity of detail, creating a blurred environment, vibrant tones, and an etherial quality.
