EMILY THOMAS MAHARRY

RECENT WORK

Emily’s work invites us to explore the natural world in fresh, deeply felt ways. Her fields of soft, textured greens, layered blues and delicate pastels feel soothing, restorative. Whether she’s painting the wetlands of her native Maine or the sun-streaked mountains that encircle her Upper Ojai home, Emily evokes the emotional memory of a place.

In recent months Emily has really started using the landscapes she spends so much time in as a departure point. Scenes are still contemplative, but now planes of color break apart and recombine, suggesting the rhythm of natural elements. These newer works, like the four shown below capture how she interprets a place and how she lets more of her emotions show.

Emily’s body of work honors environments and her connection to the natural world. The idea of not actually knowing a place until you spend time in it and feel the freedom that the space provides is what she focuses on.
