ABOUT
I am a contemporary abstract landscape painter based in Ojai, CA.
Maine is where I grew up, and went to college in New Hampshire where I received a BFA in studio art, concentrating in printmaking and drawing. I love the printmaking process and continued to work with intaglio and lithography after I graduated. Eventually, finding a printmaking studio to work in became difficult, so I started painting more and it seemed to be a good transition from printmaking. Some of my work on paper is layered on existing prints, and I incorporate that whenever I can.
My work is inspired by the places I spend time in. As a runner, I spend a lot of time in the mountains, and it is one of the ways I pay attention to my surroundings on a deeper level. I’m slowing down, listening, and noticing.
My paintings and process come from this way of observing while moving, and by the stillness that follows. I work on my paintings by building up layers of color, gesture, and intention that become integral to the finished piece. Some layers are visible, others are buried. This reflects how I experience emotion and memory.
What I focus on is how a place feels, and how it feels to me. Nature of course, is a subject of interest to me, but more importantly, my relationship to it. How, to me, a place becomes sacred.
My work is about how I interpret my surroundings, ideas, and emotions. It’s about my connection to nature and a visual note of my experience in place and space.
